Silverback gorilla vs grizzly bear12/28/2023 ![]() Extra persistent 400lbs slamming into a gorilla can be bad. There's a very significant weight difference. The bear would have the height-weight advantage, but I think an animal with opposable thumbs and a form of intelligence can do some damage, or at least escape a bear in switched-off-brain mode. Once the bear is pissed off, it is useless. That is why bear deterrent spray only works if you use it *before* the bear goes into attack mode, and in such a manner as to not put the bear into attack mode. It has only tunnel vision, and whatever is in that vision has the complete attention of the bear until the brain activity of the bear returns to normal. Self-control and decision-making go out the window, and when a bear is in fight mode it (neurologically speaking) can neither hear nor feel The neurological activity becomes concentrated in a very limited portion of the brain-the part which deals with self-preservation. When a bear is angry, huge portions of its brain simply shut off. In this case, the winner is the larger animal, but also the one that has evolved over a few million years to be an apex predator.Bears have the most messed up brain-function in all of the animal kingdom. One thing to keep in mind: as far as one on one combat in the animal kingdom goes, the larger animal is the winner. They have some wicked canines for sure, but the grizzly bear has a mouth full of sharp teeth meant for devouring meat and other items. At the end of the day, gorillas don’t have many great adaptations for warding off predators. In fact, lions have been known to kill leopards on the savannah. The bite of a gorilla is double that of a lion, and the lion is much larger than the leopard. But to claim that having a stronger bite force means an automatic win is a fallacy. Now I’ve seen you make the point that the gorilla has a stronger bite force. Even still, they are capable of doing damage to some extremely large animals including other bears. Unlike most other predatory Carnivorans, bears don’t have a quick way to kill prey, which is why they generally aren’t observed attacking large mammals for food. Somewhere on YouTube is a disturbing video of a bear smothering and eating a deer alive. One point that is very important to consider is despite the fact that bears are extremely tough and powerful creatures, they are inefficient as far as predators go. I’ve seen black bears get absolutely drilled by cars and shake it off like it was nothing. They have thick fur and skin that is extremely difficult to penetrate. On average, grizzlies weigh between 400 and 800 pounds, and when standing on hind legs can reach 6.5 feet. Many people in here are confusing grizzlies with Kodiak bears (which are fucking monsters), so I’ll try to set the record straight. So with it in mind that a 150 pound big cat is the only regular predator of gorillas (excluding humans), let’s take a look at the bear. While it is true that gorillas are definitely powerful creatures, they (along with the other species of great apes) are not built to battle off carnivores, ESPECIALLY when it’s 1 on 1. The western lowland gorilla weighs around 350 pounds. Leopards generally weigh around 150 pounds. Gorillas, even adult males, are prey items of leopards.
